Dear Blue Ridge Birders and carolinabirds:
Today I surprised, and was surprised by, two juvenile barely-able-to-fly
Barn Owls that were perched on the hood of my old and seldom-used John Deere
2040 in one of the the barns. This is the first time I have been certain of
Barn Owls nesting on this farm, though I suspected nesting in 1996.
Nesting Barn Owls does explain the disappearance of the Pigeon flock (Rock
Doves for the sticklers amongst us) that had been such a nuisance for many
years here. They seemed to get scarce in February and I do not think I have
seen a Pigeon since, though I have found a number of Pigeon-feather
"welcome-mats" in the various barns and pastures. Life is good!
