Dear Carolina Birders,
There is a pair of summer tanagers that I see in my yard on a daily basis. I
feel certain they are nesting nearby because I have seen them chasing off
blue jays. The male is especially cheeky. He sits in the open and sings or
tut-tuts all day long. He actually follows me around the yard when I am
watering flowers or strolling. I would like to think he just finds me cute,
but it is more likely that he is exhibiting territorial behavior. Has anyone
else ever noticed this behavior in tanagers? I always thought them to be
shy, retiring birds. This one is so bold, he will allow me to stand right
below him to get a photo. (I've got a jpeg file for anyone that's
interested.) He is a lovely fellow; I think he must know it too!
