If any c-birders are near the Harnett County metropolis of Buies Creek
around dusk, a stop at the Campbell University campus might be interesting.
This evening we enjoyed the spectacle of hundreds of bats leaving their day
roost, then a few minutes later watching a tornado of Chimney Swifts call it
a day and pack into a nearby chimney. The bat roost is in the D. Rich
Memorial building. Stand at the front and listen for the squeaks of the
bats. They come out from cracks just under the roof line. The swifts are
using a chimney on the nearby Day Hall building. The bats started coming
out at 8:15, the swifts checked into their evening accommodations at 8:35.
