Esther and I saw a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker apparently excavating a
hole in a locust tree today in northwestern Buncombe County. We were at
about 4,000 feet elevation on our land in the Sandymush area. No sign of a
female, but we've noted the spot and will check again. In our 30 years of
visiting that land, we've never seen a sapsucker this late or observed
signs of breeding behavior.
