RE: Bonner Bridge/Pea Island question

FYI, there is an article in the most recent edition of the NC Wildlife magazine on the bridge relocation. Hate to say it, but this is probably a good thing for the birds. I think most folks are upset about the potential lack of access to the south end of Oregon Inlet, but think about how much more productive the inlet area could be if the natural overwash process were allowed to return. The current environment at the north end of Hatteras Island is QUITE artificial, only remotely resembling a natural inlet.

Len,

There are a couple of locations on the web (NCDOT web site
(http://www.ncdot.org/) and Outer Banks Task Force web site
(http://www.obtf.org/)) that have various pieces of information up about
how the bridge replacement process has been proceeding, but the sites also
have a lot of material that deals with other transportation issues, so you
have to be selective, or else you end up with papers that are not really on
point. There really isn't anything yet that gives you the pro/con and is
relatively short that is on the web, but the pending environmental review
process will do that, at a much greater level of detail.

The two recent pieces that would be best for providing the agency
perspectives are NCDOT's 4 page "Bonner Bridge Update," which discusses the
alternatives, and the FWS 2 page "Herbert C. Bonner Bridge Replacement
Project, Compatibility Issues for Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in
North Carolina," which also discusses the alternatives and goes a bit more
into some of the refuge issues. I quickly looked, but didn't see them on
the web, so I guess they haven't been posted yet, but I can't be sure.

You can call 866.803.0529 to be added to the NCDOT mailing list for the
project if you like, that would get you future updates; if you call FWS at
252.473.1131, my guess is they may mail you the FWS paper.

I also am happy to speak with anyone about the project; this is my fifth
year of working on Oregon Inlet issues. I can be reached at 252.995.3312.
I have volunteered to lead bird walks at Pea Island (which probably
requires me to provide the disclaimer that all views expressed are my own),
so I can, and often do, wear the birding hat too.
