Saturday morning (9/25) at Broad River WMA in Fairfield Co., SC was a
perfect fall day with the following noteworthy birds:
Swainson's Thrush and Gray-cheeked Thrush -- predawn flyovers
Sedge Wren - rarely encountered migrant this far inland
Philadelphia Vireo - one extremely cooperative SINGING male
Cedar Waxwing - 3 adults
Blackburnian Warbler - 1 female/im
Yellow-breasted Chat - 1
Early Saturday afternoon at Santee NWR Pine Island Unit, Clarendon CO. SC:
Peregrine Falcon -- 1 or 2 im, at two different locations
(Other raptors in the area were Sharp-shinned Hawk, Am Kestrel,
Red-shouldered, Broad-winged, Bald Eagles, and Turkey Vultures)
Purple Gallinule - 1 adult in dull winter colors with 4 immature birds; nice
to see proof of breeding at this northerly outpost for the species,
especially considering the dry summer and the less than hospitable-looking
pond.
Sorry I missed the CBC meeting and the Phalarope on Lake Wallace!
