Hello, this is an October 28 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

AM. WHITE PELICANS
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
EARED GREBE
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS

Up to 24 AM. WHITE PELICANS continue to be seen at Bear Island WMA in SC.
These birds may best be looked for late in the afternoon but they be present
anytime. Look in the pond behind the house at the entrance to Bear Island WMA.

A possible ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen today 10-28 at Jeffress Rd. in
Henderson county, NC. Birders along Hooper Lane/ Jeffress Rd. should be on
the lookout for this bird. Please carefully document any sightings of this
bird as it could be a 1st record for a North Carolina ash-throated
flycatcher. From Road 191, go North on Hooper Lane and turn LEFT on Jeffress
Rd. Go 1/4 mile to where the road makes a sharp turn to the right. Look for
several piles of fertilizer on the left. The flycatcher was moving and
feeding along the ditch at this location on the left side of the road.

Hooper Lane has been a good place to look for sparrows in NC. Up to 20
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS have been seen this fall and some are still going through.
For details on birding Hooper Lane/ Jeffress Rd. call Wayne Forsythe at
828-697-6628.

Up to 10 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and an EARED GREBE were seen at the Hemingway,
SC sewage treatment ponds on 10-25 and 10-26. This number of white-winged
scoters is very notable anywhere inland in the Carolinas; especially South
Carolina.

Thanks this week to Bill Guptill, Pete worthington, Wayne Forsythe, and David
Bradshaw for their calls and reports.
