Rough-legged Hawk--Alligator River

Rose & I were able to observe the Rough-legged hawk at Alligator River today
(12/12). He was located in the fields across from the maint. area, about 300
yds beyond. He stayed on the ground, in the same spot for close to 25
minutes, barely moving except to chase down the occasional grasshopper. We
were able to scope him the entire time.

In addition the the Hawk, there were two flocks of bobwhites out there,
totaling about 20 birds. One flock was in the main. shed fence (about 12),
and the other flock was feeding along the outside fence of the helo pad.

Also saw two bears, and while scoping the hawk, noted two dog-ears sticking
up from the grass just to the right of the hawk. The sun was bad, but it was
either a coyote or a red wolf. Need to consult some other books to check out
the facial markings, but regardless of which one it was, it was a nice
addition to the white-morph hawk!
