Friends, the Nature Conservancy offers useful downloadable information
about invasive exotic plants, including English Ivy, at this site:
http://tncweeds.ucdavis.edu/esadocs.html
Another place to get started on this subject is a U.S. government site:
http://www.nbii.gov/invasive/
Combatting aggressive invaders is a huge challenge, but it makes intuitive
sense that native birds and other critters do best when their habitats are
intact -- which means native plants.
That's not to say one must go all native in a backyard garden, but for sure
refrain from using invasive exotics, and consider the merits of native
plants -- adapted to their sites, better drought resistance, better
resistance to disease and insect pests.
