This AM I put on my kneehigh rubber boots and trudged through the snow out to
my feeders. The snow was so deep that my boots weren't tall enough. Can't
remember that ever happening in NC, last memory of that was in CT where I
grew up!!
Anyway, lots of ground birds searching for the usual white millet that I
was attempting to sprinkle gently on the ground for them, quickly realizing
that if tossed it too vigorously it would sink too deep.
The most fun I had was getting very close up views of the Red-breasted
Nuthatch that favors my peanut tube feeder. I slowly walked up to within 6
inches of that cuty while it was trying so hard to get some peanuts out of
the feeder. I had a handful of fresh, dry peanuts that it almost took, but
then changed it's mind and flew off. My hand was only 2 inches away, what a
nice bird.
May try to drive over to Big Woods later to sprinkle some mealworms on
the ground for the PS Flycatcher, If I can make it up the big hill on our
road, and also avoid destroying the olympic downhill sledding track that all
the kids have constructed.
