Hooper Lane birds

Dwayne and I, along with Bob Ellis from Columbia, SC, birded the
Hendersonville area today. We were hoping for pipits and longspurs but
wound up with Short-eared Owl and White-crowned Sparrow instead. I know, I
know, you have to take what you can get sometimes! We flushed the owl
around the same place where everyone else has been seeing it and were able
to view it from within 15 feet for a few seconds before it flew away and
returned to cover. The white-crown was in the same general area as the owl
and skulked around awhile within the vegetation before revealing its
identity to us. We also birded Lake Osceola and had five Ruddy Ducks and a
handful of Black Ducks (and a Black Duck-Mallard hybrid---a "life-hybrid"
for us!!!) mixed in with the Mallards, Coots, and Canada Geese. Jackson
Park was pretty slow birding but brought Green-winged Teal and Pileated
Woodpecker to the days list. Hope everyone else got out and about on this
beautiful day!
