Hello, this is a Feb. 8 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
Pelagic trip results - YELLOW- NOSED ALBATROSS
BLACK-HEADED GULL
LITTLE GULLS
ROUGH- LEGGED HAWK
SHORT-EARED OWLS
COMMON GOLDENEYE
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER
EARED GREBES
OLDSQUAW
The PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER at Jordan Lake in NC has not been reported since
the devastating winter storm over 2 weeks ago.
Brian Pattesons's offshore birding trip on 2-5 was astoundingly successful.
The entire boat was treated to a very cooperative YELLOW- NOSED ALBATROSS
only a couple of miles offshore between Avon, NC and Rodanthe, NC. This will
be a first documented record for this species for NC and one of only a few
for North America. Other birds of interest on the trip (all seen well) were 4
GREAT SKUAS, 2 ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL, LITTLE GULL, 4 RAZORBILLS, N.
FULMAR, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, and RED PHALAROPE. Brian still has plenty of
room left on a 2-19 trip off the Outer Banks. Call Brian Patteson at 252-
986-1363 for details on how to get aboard.
A BLACK-HEADED GULL is being seen regularly at the Morehead City, NC sewage
treatment plant. For details contact John Fussell at < jfuss@bmd.clis.com>. A
BLACK- HEADED GULL was also seen at Cape Hatteras Point 2-6 with the
Bonaparte's gulls there.
LITTLE GULLS have appeared on the Outer Banks this winter. Up to 3 were found
among Bonaparte's gulls from Nag's Head south to Cape Hatteras Point Feb. 5-6.
The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK present for months at Alligator River NWR was seen most
recently on 2-6. Scan the fields and skies from Milltail RD. south of US 64.
SHORT -EARED OWLS have been enjoyed by birders at a couple of locations in
NC. Up to 3 have been seen recently on the Outer Banks from the first viewing
stand on Hwy. 12 south of Whalebone Junction in Nags Head, NC.
Up to 2 owls continue to be seen in Henderson County, NC along Hooper Lane.
While birding Hooper Lane, be sure to look for LAPLAND LONGSPURS in the pipit
flocks there.
A female COMMON GOLDENEYE was seen 2-6 at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. An
OLDSQUAW has also been reported from this location.
A female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was at the Salt Pond 2-6 at Cape Point.
Two EARED GREBES were in the ocean just north of the Point on 2-4 among many
horned grebes.
Thanks this week to John Fussell, Jeremy Hyman, John Connors, Brian Patteson
, Len Pardue and Faye Metzl for their calls and reports.
