Birders,
Simon Thompson's Ventures outing in N. Mecklenburg Co., NC north of Charlotte
on 2-19 produced 6-7 LECONTE'S SPARROWS in an inaccessible area to the
general public. Simon's previous report on the results of the trip did not
mention these birds because of the location. On Sunday 2-20, seven local
birders relocated 3-4 of these birds and got point blank looks as one
scampered around at our feet for about 5 minutes.
LeConte's sparrows have been widely reported this winter from both
Carolinas. Birders should check sparrow fields closely for this species,
especially those containing wet or damp areas with broomsedge. Apparently
this species can be found , at least this year, from the coast to the western
piedmont of the Carolinas.
