Ticks

All,

Different ticks have different life cycles and are active at different
times of the year; the ticks most of you have seen on birds in the
winter probably don't have much to do with mammals. The seed ticks you
see in the summer are the larvae of the lone star tick, which has a very
wide host range. You are most likely to encounter Ixodes deer ticks in
the late winter and early spring; I received a bite from one at
Mattamuskeet 2 years ago New Year's day. Adult Ixodes are not a lot
bigger than "seed" lone stars.
