Carolinabirders,
Yesterday I began checking the 140 bluebird boxes at the
Sandhills Research and Education Center in northeast Columbia,
SC. About 20 boxes had completed nests, but no eggs and
another 10 had just begun nest building. Chickadees had eggs in 2
boxes and a nest in another, titmice had eggs in 1 box and 2
boxes had nests, and Brown-headed Nuthatches had a nest with 4
eggs in 1 box.
Based on the last couple of years, the bluebirds are several weeks
early this year with nest building. The chickadees and titmice are
about a week or two early and the nuthatches are right on schedule.
Good Birding, lex
