Jackson Park (WNC) threatened

The Henderson County (NC) Commissioners have voted to lease 2.2 acres of
Jackson Park to the National Bicycle League for a BMX track (an extreme
sport for bikes). The land (presently known as ballfield #8) is
adjacent to the only reliable American Woodcock breeding field or singing
site on public land
in western NC that I know of. It also is only a few hundred yards from the
famed Warbler
Trail (36 species of warbler in spring and fall migration), and the access
road to the future track runs off the main park road just opposite the
beginning of the Warbler Trail. Parking is very limited in this area of the
park.

If the potential habitat disturbance and destruction which the BMX track and
its visitors could bring is of concern to you, please let the Henderson
County Commissioners know this. According to one commissioner, they were
unaware of the unique habitat so close to the track site when they voted on
the issue. A letter to the editor of the Hendersonville Times-News would
also be great.

The Henderson County Commissioners' address is:
100 North King St.
Hendersonville NC 28792-5097.

Their names are:
Grady Hawkins, Chairman
William Moyer, Vice-Chairman
Marilyn Gordon
Renee Kumor
Don Ward.

The Hendersonville Times-News accepts letters to the editor up to 300 words.
Their e-mail is tnletters@iol.com.

This is not an invitation to discuss or debate this issue on carolinabirds.
I appreciate Will's willingness to let me post this information in an
attempt to save this wonderful spot.

Thanks.
