Those interested in the nuances of gull id should check out the photos and
descriptions of a vega "Herring" gull currently in Texas at
www.martinreid.com/vegaup05.html. This site also has some links to other
gull photo sites. Vega is a dark backed Herring type gull currently
considered a subspecies. It occurs in eastern Siberia through Japan. It
may be elevated to full species. Someday one might show up at Hatteras.
