Watauga Birds

Hi all,

Spring is trying to arrive in the High Country. We now have Blue-headed
Vireo, and lots of residents that leave us for the winter like Common
Flicker, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Tree Swallow. Today I had a nice
flock of 12 or so Vesper Sparrows in the Big Hill section of the County.
Yesterday the news was the flock of 55 to 60 Ring-billed Gulls at Wal-Mart.
We get gulls every March with most occurring by the 25th. We also had a 1st
county record for Herring Gull back on the 21st.

Walton Conway still has his Evening Grosbeaks every morning. Now the flock
is at about 50 or so. Siskins are still widespread around the county as
well. Still waiting for Louisiana Waterthrush and House Wren.

I was in Wilmington earlier in the week and didn't see a whole lot (about 75
species but not many numbers of shorebirds or waders). The highlight was
Wilson's Plover at the north end of Wrightsville Beach up near the resort
falling into the inlet. Also a Great Cormorant on the remains of Johnny
Mercer's Pier. The Azaleas are beautiful though. Azalea Festival is next
week.
