This report is obviously out of the area, but thought there might be some
interest in the Carolinas. A great place to pick up a few life birds if you
haven't been.
My wife and I took our second trip to Florida. Tried for a Spring trip the
last week in March. Turns out we were a little early for a couple of target
species but picked up a few winter birds that were still around. This is
just a personal highlight list - no logic. If anyone would like further
details about a specific bird, send me an e-mail directly. The numbers are
skewed because we were searching specific habitats. Missed target birds
were: Snail kite, Smooth-billed ani, Mangrove cuckoo, Black-whiskered
vireo. Any advise for our next trip?
Northern gannet - 2
Magnificent frigate bird - 2
Mottled duck - common
Reddish egret - 1
Bald eagle - several
Swallow-tailed kite - common in right habitat
Northern harrier - 3 (unexpected)
Short-tailed hawk - 3 (target bird, we had to hunt hard)
Crested caracara - 15 (almost common in the right area)
Sandhill crane - common
Eurasian collared dove - common
White-winged dove - 4 (very localized)
Western kingbird - 5
Eastern kingbird - 1 (unexpected)
Gray kingbird - 2 (harder to find than expected; too early?)
Scissor-tailed flycatcher - 1
Florida scrub jay - abundant
- the following warbler list is complete:
Yellow-rumped warbler - uncommon
Common yellowthroat - uncommon
Pine warbler - common
Norther parula - common
Black and white warbler - 1
Palm warbler - abundant
