The flaking paint is black, so it can't look like eggshells to the jay. I wondered if the rust was somehow appealing. The jays have been eating all the eggshells I put out; so they are looking for nutritional supplements.
Oh, and it was a Red SHOULDERED Hawk call he made - sorry about that.
