No Ruff on Sunday, 4/16 at Santee Coastal Reserve

Dear birders,
my son Zeb and I had a wonderful day at Santee Coastal on Sunday. I studied
a mixed flock of Black-necked Stilts, both Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers,
Pectoral Sanpipers, and Short-billed Dowitchers, but could not locate a Ruff.
The Ruff would have been a life bird. We did hear a chorus of about 20
Bull Alligators grunting their Spring love calls from the boardwalk in the
Washoe
Reserve. It was lovely music, and the most gator grunting I have ever heard
in my 20 years in gator country.

PS- Santee Coastal Reserve is in Northern Charleston county, about 5 miles
past McClellanville,SC, almost to the Georgetown county line. You reach it
from Highway 17, look for the brown "Wildlife viewing" sign with the
binocular,
then turn onto South Santee Road abd drive until you see the Coastal reserve
sign. The road into the reserve is great for Pitcher Plants and Toothache
Grass, and we heard Bachman's Sparrow and Red-cockaded on the way out.
