swallow-tailed kite

On saturday Doug Shadwick and I took a tour of Green
Swamp and the south coast including Sunset Beach,
Brunswick Village, the Southport ferry, and Fort
Fisher. We tallied 107 species (with a couple of other
probables).
The bird of the day was without doubt the
Swallow-tailed Kite we saw along Macedonia road in the
Green Swamp. We had one fifteen second look at it as
it flew over a plowed field then disappeared. We went
to alert three fellow birders (only two of whose names
I can remember at present so I will refrain from
naming them in the interest of fairness) and when we
got back to the area the bird was right over the road,
soaring and swooping like a big old barn swallow. I
wasnt even using binoculars as he swooped right over
my head, no more than about 40 feet up. He then
disappeared again.
Things we noted on the day were the dearth of
shorebirds at Sunset Beach (only about 250 or so) and
terns (we saw maybe 10 all told, mostly Royals, one
forster's, one least). All in all a pretty good day
though.
