Hello, this is an April 27 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

SWALLOW-TAILED KITE
BLACK WHISKERED VIREO (?)
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS (breeding areas)
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen 4-22 along Little Macedonia Rd. on the
southwestern edge of the Green Swamp in southeastern NC.

A BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO has been reported in the log book at Pea Island NWR.
There have been no other reports of this bird but birders at that refuge
should be aware of the possibility that this species may be around. Occurence
of BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO in NC is not unprecedented. A singing bird was
present for weeks at Cape Lookout a few years ago.

A reliable spot to see GOLDEN WINGED WARBLERS in NC is around the
intersection of NC 143 and NC 28 in southwestern NC. Up to 8 territorial
males were there on 4-20. For more directions and details contact John or
Paula Wright at 252-756-5139.

Three observers gave reports of BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS from the
Charleston, SC area recently according to Bob Chinn. For more details call
Bob Chinn at 843-552-7884.

General migration notes: ANHINGAS have been seen as for inland and north as
Chapel Hill, NC. CASPIAN TERNS have been widely reported from inland lakes
throughout the Carolina's piedmont and mountains. ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS,
INDIGO BUNTINGS, and BLUE GROSBEAKS are now appearing at feeders, delighting
many observers. Spring may be the best time to look for LARK SPARROWS at
inland locations. A single bird spent some time in Asheville, NC recently and
there is a recent April record from Charlotte, NC.

Thanks this week to Dennis Burnett, John Wright, John Fussell, Bruce Young,
Doug Shadwick, Jack Peachey, Charlotte Goedsche, Bob Chinn, Matt Cusack, and
Wayne Forsythe for their calls and reports.
