Hello, this is a May 12 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

BLACK RAIL
ICELAND GULL
SOOTY TERN
SWAINSON'S WARBLER
STILT SANDPIPERS
LINCOLN'S SPARROW

BLACK RAILS have been heard calling in the marsh at the Bodie Island
Lighthouse pond on NC's Outer Banks several times in the past two weeks.

Birders heading out to the Outer Banks may want to stop at the McDonald's in
Manteo where an imm. ICELAND GULL was seen several times the first week of
May. Look just east of the McDonalds on a newly graded development site where
gulls can be seen loafing.

A SOOTY TERN was seen at the Cedar Island ferry on May 10.

STILT SANDPIPERS have been seen inland in both Carolinas this spring. Single
birds were at Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC; and four birds were seen at
Santee Coastal Reserve.

SWAINSON'S WARBLERS are rare in the piedmont of the Carolinas but one was
caught and banded in York County, SC on May 1.

A LINCOLN'S SPARROW visited a feeder briefly in Charlotte, NC on May 6 but
has not been seen since. About half of the Charlotte area records for this
species are spring records.

Thanks this week to Bill Hilton, John Fussell, Jeff Blalock, Wayne Forsythe,
Heathy Walker, Charles Gambill, and Susan Lester for their calls and reports.
