Hello, this is a May 25 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring

Club. Highlights on this report include:

ROSEATE SPOONBILL
WHITE-WINGED DOVE
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS
SHINY COWBIRDS
MISSISSIPPI KITES
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER
LONG-TAILED DUCK

A BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO was discovered May 20 at Cape Lookout in NC. This
bird was singing and may stay around for some time like the 1994
BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO at the same location. Access to the area is by private
ferry; birders will need to hire transportation to and from the island. Once
on the island, notice a grove of pines just south of the lighthouse. South of
here is a stretch of 1/2 mile of little woody vegetation. Another pine grove
begins and stretches south for about 1/2 mile. The vireo was in the
northernmost extremity of this pine grove. For more information on this bird
contact John Fussell at <jfuss@bmd.clis.com>

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL is being seen at Pea Island NWR on the Outer Banks of NC.
Look around North Pond from the visitor's center or from the observation
platforms on the south side.

Two SHINY COWBIRDS have been seen at a feeder on North Topsail Beach, NC.
Contact Jamie Cameron at< shop7@earthlink.net> for updates.

MISSISSIPPI KITES have returned to Laurinburg, NC and can be seen breeding
there. Call Barbara Gearheart at 910-277-0272 for details on the best way to
see these birds. A MISSISSIPPI KITE has also been seen in the Croatan NF in
eastern NC along Millis Rd.

WHITE -WINGED DOVES can still be found in Beaufort, NC around the
intersection of Live Oak and Ann Sts. One bird was seen 5-25 at this location.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported from the Salisbury, NC area on May
19. The bird was seen at exit 76 on I-85.

An OLIVE -SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at the NC Zoological Park on May 20. The
bird was perching on dead tree tops around the sea lion exhibit.

Brian Patteson has room left on offshore birding trips out of Hatteras, NC
scheduled for Sat. June 3 and Sunday June 4. Last weekends trips sighted 2
HERALD PETRELS, BAND-RUMPED STORM PETRELS, ARCTIC TERNS, LONG-TAILED JAEGERS,
and MANX SHEARWATER; among more common species. Fishing boat captains have
already reported TROPICBIRDS this year from these waters. Contact Brian
Patteson at 252-986-1363 for details.

A male LONG-TAILED DUCK is being seen at the Pitt St. causeway in Mt.
Pleasant , SC. this duck was last reported 5-24.

One message concerning BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS from Hilton Head, SC was
received but the machine cut off the caller before his number and vital
details could be gotten. Hopefully the call will be repeated. Please remember
to speak loudly without long pauses when leaving a message on the tape.

Thanks this week to John Fussell, Robby Lambert, Danny Swicegood, Jamie
Cameron, S. Mckeon, Lisbeth Stockman, Andrea Zuckerman, and Bob Burrell for
their calls and reports.
