Hello, this is a June 9 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
MISSISSIPPI KITES
GOLDEN EAGLES
A pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS are on a breeding territory in Union
County(NC) south of Monroe, NC. The owners of the farm where the birds are
located are allowing birders to visit. No phone call is necessary. From US 74
in Monroe take Hwy. 200 South (Skyway Blvd). After a few blocks 200 turns
right. STAY STRAIGHT HERE. You will then be on Hwy. 207 (Hayne St.) Stay on
Hayne through the center of town and for a few miles south of Monroe. At a
blinking light 207 will turn right (Wolf Pond Rd.). Take this right turn and
go approximately 3.5 miles to where large , high tension power lines cross
the road. Almost directly under these lines turn left onto a long narrow ,
gravel road. Pass several houses and cross a creek, then immediately turn
right onto another gravel road. This road will take you back under the power
lines. Notice a steel support tower on the left very close to the road. The
nest is in this tower. Park on up the road well away from the tower and begin
scanning the surrounding fields, fences, and power lines for the
flycatchers. These birds can stay out of sight for lenghthy periods of time
so be patient; all birders visiting so far have been successful in seeing
these birds. Thanks to Blayne and Anne Olsen for allowing birders to visit
their property. Anyone wishing more details can call me at 704-532-6336.
MISSISSIPPI KITES are being seen in Laurinburg, NC and Roanoke Rapids, NC. In
Laurinburg, go to Laurinburg Presbyterian Church on Church St. (US 74
Business). Stand between the church and King St and look in the front yard of
the house 2 doors up on Church St. There is a tall sweet gum over the house.
The nest is visible in this tree and the sitting bird can be seen well with a
scope. Periodically the other bird will fly over in good view. In Roanoke
Rapids, MISSISSIPPI KITES are being seen at 7th and Franklin Sts. or along
7th st. east of Henry St. It is suspected that there is a nest in the 800
block of Henry St.
Two GOLDEN EAGLES have been reported from Hilton Head, SC in the Spanish
Wells area. For details call Mrs. Chapin at 843-689-3403.
Thanks this week to Anne Olsen, Frank Enders, Bill Hilton, and Nini Chapin
for their calls and reports.
