Wood Storks

Sunday, June 25, Rich Boyd and I went to Sunset Beach to find Wood Storks.
We saw 8 of them flying from the ponds off of Hwy 179 across the
Intracoastal to the marshes on the sound side of Sunset Beach(about 6:00
pm). The ponds were graced by many Common Egrets, Snowy Egrets, White
Ibises, Wood Ducks(with all sizes of juveniles), Common Moorhens with young,
and one 8-9 foot alligator. We then went over to Sunset Beach and saw 2
Loggerhead Shrikes on the wires off of North Shore Drive. What a find! A
beach watch produced the usual, with the exception of one Caspian Tern. John
Fussell's book, "A Birder's Guide to Coastal North Carolina", gave perfect
directions for locating the Wood Storks.
