A trip to Congaree Swamp National Monument on Saturday by Molly Bonnell,
Kathleen O'Grady and I found the birding a bit slow but interesting
nonetheless. While the insects were more plentiful than the birds (a few
deerflies, a few more chiggers), we had the following birds:
Red-shouldered Hawk - one of them a youngster apparently, who called
without pause for the first hour and a half we were at the Swamp
Red-headed Woodpeckers - not hard to find at the Swamp but always nice to
find nonetheless
Northern Parulas - several seen, one of them possibly a fledge
Prothonotary Warbler - more heard than seen, but we did get nice looks at
one adult and two fledges - the fledges were following the adult around,
feeding themselves a bit and begging food, as well
Great Crested Flycatcher - a nice look at one, several others heard
Louisiana Waterthrush - excellent looks at one who decided to ignore us and
stroll (bob-bob-bobbing along) down the service road, feeding
Tufted Titmouse - we were surrounded by what appeared to be several
families of Titmice together at one point, some of them fledges, some
adults, all feeding voraciously on whiteflies clinging to the plants around us
among the heard onlys or didn't get a good look at: Hooded Warbler,
Red-eyed Vireo, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren,
Carolina Chickadees.
Butterflies included Red-spotted Purple, an anglewing (tentatively
identified as a Question Mark), Tiger Swallowtail, and the Swamp's usual
complement of lovely Zebra Swallowtails.
