Hello, this is a June 28 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina , sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER
WHITE-WINGED DOVE
WARBLING VIREOS
DICKCISSELS
MAGNOLIA WARBLER
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
A nesting pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS can be easily seen south of
Monroe, NC in Union County (NC). From US 74 in Monroe, take Hwy 200 South.
When 200 turns right STAY STRAIGHT. This will be Hwy 207 (Hayne St.) Follow
207 through Monroe and for a few miles south of town. Turn Right on Wolf Pond
Rd. (still 207) and go about 3.5 miles to where high tension wires cross the
road. Almost directly under the wires turn left onto a gravel drive way. Pass
several houses and cross a creek , then immediately turn right onto another
gravel drive. Go a couple of hundred yards and park just past a family plot
cemetery. Scan the fields and wires for the flycatchers.
A WHITE -WINGED DOVE can be easily heard and seen in Beaufort, NC. Look and
listen around the intersection of Live Oak and Ann Streets. EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVES are easy to see here as well.
WARBLING VIREOS have been discovered in Cleveland County, NC near
Cherryville, NC. From Cherryville take 274 south to Old Post Rd (CR 1425).
Turn right and go into Cleveland County after a couple of miles. Pass a
sewage treatment plant, farm and silo then cross the Muddy Fork River. Pull
off the road where safe at the river. Look for the vireos in the sycamores
here.
Dickcissels can be found in Cleveland and Gaston Counties in NC. For
directions to these birds call Simon Thompson at 828-859-0382.
A singing male MAGNOLIA WARBLER was seen June 28 at Roan Mt. in NC. Look
around the parking lot at the old Cloudland Hotel location.
Several birders have reported YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS from both Carolinas this
June. Reports have come in from coastal areas in SC, York county in SC's
piedmont and Mt. Mitchell in NC's mountains.
Thanks this week to John Fussell, Susan Arrington, Lex Glover, Len Pardue,
Bill Hilton, and Simon Thompson for their calls and reports.
