Hello, this is an October 31 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
FULVOUS WHISTLING DUCKS
ROSS'S GEESE
SNOW BUNTING
LAPLAND LONGSPUR
GREAT CORMORANT
RED CROSSBILLS
Up to 8 FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen Oct. 28 at Pea Island NWR and the
number grew to 26 birds as of today Oct.31. Look in North Pond at the refuge.
Today the birds were easily seen from the south dike of North Pond. Up to 3
FULVOUS WHISTLING -DUCKS were seen along the entrance road to the
Mattamuskeet NWR headquarters on 10-27.
Just south of North Pond check the snow goose flocks along Hwy. 12. Two
ROSS'S GEESE have been seen since 10-28. Both of these birds were seen today
10-31.
Jordan Lake in NC has provided some inland rarities recently. On 10-28 a SNOW
BUNTING was present at the Seaforth area and 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at
Ebenezer Point. A imm. GREAT CORMORANT has been seen at the Crosswinds Marina.
At least 30 RED CROSSBILLS were foraging in white pines along the entrance
road to Bass Lake at Moses Cone Park in Blowing Rock, NC on 10-22.
