Hello, this is a November 12 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
WHITE-FACED IBIS
FULVOUS WHISTLING DUCKS
ROSS'S GEESE
SNOW BUNTING
WHITE-WINGED DOVES
COMMON GROUND-DOVES
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
VESPER SPARROW
PURPLE SANDPIPER
GREAT CORMORANT
A WHITE-FACED IBIS has been seen at Savannah NWR in SC along the Laurel Hill
Wildlife Drive. Carefully scan through the Glossy Ibis to look for the
White-faced. This bird was identified by it's red eyes, seen by several
observers since Nov. 1.
Up to 27 FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS continue to be seen at Pea Island NWR in NC.
Look along the south dike of North Pond. The birds were last reported 11-10.
Just south of North Pond along Hwy. 12 look for 2-3 ROSS'S GEESE usually seen
feeding right by the highway. Look for a large open mudflat close to road on
the west side where the Snow geese feed. Scan through the flock to find the
ROSS'S.
Other birds to look for on the Outer Banks include a male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER
at the Salt Pond at Cape Point, CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS and VESPER SPARROWS at
the south side of Oregon Inlet, GREAT CORMORANT at Oregon Inlet, and PURPLE
SANDPIPERS at Oregon Inlet.
At least 2 WHITE-WINGED DOVES are coming to a feeder in Manteo, NC. The
feeder is located at the corner of Agona and Uppowoc Sts.( Turn east off US
64 at the Pizza Hut and go 1 block.) The house is on the left with a white
picket fence. Pass the house and park in front of the vacant lot next door.
Watch the trees, especially the holly above the feeder.
Two COMMON GROUND-DOVES were seen at Church Island in NC on 11-6. They were
seen on wires along Waterlily RD.
A SNOW BUNTING spent several days at Mt. Mitchell State Park in NC in the
short grass lawn just inside the main gates to the park. This bird may still
be present.
Thanks this week to Harriet Whitsett, Jeff Lewis, Pat Moore, Dennis Forsythe,
Don Patterson, and Faye Metzl for their calls and reports.
