Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge

With Barbara Gearhart, of Laurinburg, NC, as my very capable guide, I
enjoyed an introductory tour of the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge
Wednesday, November 15. At our first stop, we encountered a good cross
section of winter sparrows in great weedy field habitat. A most
cooperative LeConte's Sparrow, first noted by Barbara, was in view for a
couple of minutes. For anyone interested in checking this or other
locations in the Refuge, a map from the office is necessary for
navigating the many roads. This sparrow location was approximately half
way down the unpaved access road to Arrowhead Lake. I suggest you walk
in, leaving your car where the unpaved section begins.

Located just west of the Pee Dee River in Anson County, N.C., near
Wadesboro, this refuge of almost 8500 acres has great potential for
attracting a broad spectrum of birds. A good way of getting familiar
with the area would be involvement in their Christmas Bird Count.
Details of this annual event are available at the Refuge office, tel 704
694 4424.
