Results of the Vermilion Flycatcher trip

After a brief stop at home to grab some sustenance after the mango trip, we
headed down to Goldsboro and the Vermilion Flycatcher spot previously described
by Eric Dean. We arrived about 2:45 and were told the bird had not been seen
since the previous afternoon. Nonetheless, we circumnavigated the fenced area
and canvassed the area; no flycatcher. We did see a Cooper's Hawk in the area
which caused some concern as a bright red flycatcher would probably stick out
like the proverbial thumb. In any case, we were not yet ready to get back in
the car and drive so we decided to hang around under the hypothesis that the
bird might return from wherever it was to the area in which it had been roosting
as the sun set. Sure enough, at about 4:30 Hal Broadfoot came up from the
riverbank about the same time the bird arrived at the gate in the fence. We
enjoyed watching him successfully forage for twenty minutes or so before leaving
the bird to his own devices and heading home.
