Huntington Beach State Park, 11/25/00

My wife and I had already made plans and cleared time for an
overnight trip to the Myrtle Beach area when the weather forecast
turned bad. I planned a wet weather itinerary and we went anyway.
This morning we stopped at Myrtle Beach State Park, at ponds in
Surfside Beach, and at HBSP.
At Myrtle Beach SP we saw plenty of gulls in the air and there
were mallards in the pond beside the entrance road. On the other
hand, the ocean was fairly rough and there were no loons, horned
grebes, or scoters around the fishing pier. At Surfside Beach we saw
a couple of coots.
After we arrived at HBSP the weather gradually worsened. We
spent most of our time at the Mullet Pond observation platform on the
causeway. Then we drove around the park, looking for whatever might
appear. Although we ended the trip with a very modest list of
species, we had added three new ones to our list for the park:
belted kingfisher, eastern phoebe, and red-shouldered hawk.
Incidentally, a common loon was loafing on Mullet Pond.
We "swam" our way back to Fayetteville and are glad to be
indoors, dry, and safe and sound.
