Fw: Whooping Crane in Russell Co. VA (Part 1-V)

We realize this isn't in NC---but it is all around us!!! Can you believe we
were only 10 miles from this bird today and didn't know about it until we
got home!!!!! It's only about 30 miles on the other side of TN/NC border in
Chuckey, TN if anyone is interested for tomorrow! I may have to call in
sick . . . . .

> A wonderful WHOOPING CRANE spent her
>Thanksgiving Day in Russell County, VA and
>enjoyed her holiday meal along the Clinch
>River west of Lebanon.
> At this hour the bird is at a pond in
>Greene County, TN!
> The exciting discovery touched off a frenzy
>among Northeast Tennessee birders Sunday (11/26)
>afternoon. Birders scrambled from throughout the
>area as the unbelievable report spread. They dropped
>everything to rush to the Greene County pond.
> The bird should continue to be present for a
>day or so at the Tennessee pond until weather
>conditions improve.
> Rick Knight managed to get telephoto shots.
> As far as known, this is the first time a
>Whooping Crane has been seen in the wild by any
>birders in Tennessee and the first known occurence
>of the species in Virginia.
>
>DIRECTIONS:

>Continue through Chuckey (crossing the railroad) and
>across the Nolichuckey River bridge on Tenn. Rt. 351.
>In a distance of about 1.5 miles turn right onto
>Ebenezer Road. You will see a sign indicating the
>"Ebenezer Place" subdivision where you turn onto
>Ebenezer Road. In just a few yards down Ebenezer
>Road, you turn right into Ebenezer Place. Drive up
>the hill to the first street on the left. Turn left
>and go to the crest of the hill. Look off several
>hundred yards south (to your left at the crest) to
>the farm pond in the far field. There you will see
>the bird. You will need a spotting scope to see
