Subject: Whooping Crane update

[November 28]

I called the International Crane Foundation tracking group tonight
to get the latest word on the Whooping Crane ("Whitney") that was
sighted in Greene County over the weekend and was told that things are
looking good.

The bird spent last night near Anderson, South Carolina and made it
to Statesboro, Georgia today, not far northwest of Savannah. At this
rate, she will be back in her "homeland" near Kissimmee, Florida in
another day or two. Apparently, she has a reasonably accurate sense of
direction, though her daily flight capability (a maximum of about 200
miles) is considerably less than that of the birds in the Texas
population.

There has been no report of "Winston," the male bird that left
Michigan with Whitney and disappeared around Lake Erie on the 22nd.
