waxwings, shrikes, bobwhites

Hello, I'm a first-time contributor to the Carolina
Birds group...

In keeping with other folks' postings, last night I
saw a handful of cedar waxwings in a semi-wooded area
near my place south of Raleigh. The only time I've
seen waxwings this late in the year was on a trip to
Duluth, Minn., about 10 years ago. (Waxwings have been
showing up in our neighborhood throughout since late
winter this year.)

The night before last, I saw a summer tanager in the
same area.

Unfortunately, the loggerhead shrikes who nested in
our meadow the last two years (apparently successfully
two years ago and unsuccessfully last year) didn't
reappear this year. I have, however, recently seen a
shrike hanging out not far from my place in an area of
hayfields and pasture along Holland Church Road.

In the wet brushy grasslands across the road from our
place, the bobwhite quail have been noisy and active
the last few weeks.

Also seen and/or heard there this week:

-- Common Yellowthroat
-- Prairie Warbler
-- Indigo Buntings
-- American Goldfinches
-- Red-winged Blackbirds
-- Mourning Doves
-- Purple Finches
