One night last fall while outside doing some nocturnal listening, I was
only a little surprised to hear a chorus of coyotes begin to "sing". I
knew we had coyotes in the area, having seen a road-killed coyote a few
months before, but I was a bit surprised at the apparent numbers. My 70
pound retreiver, who usually does nocturnal listening with me by sitting
quietly at my side, was quite intimidated by the howling and moved herself
over to sit on my feet and shiver just a little. I guess if there were a
pack of animals in my genus that were characterized as "a stomach with
sharp teeth" howling at the top of my driveway, I'd be a bit intimidated,
too.
