Dickcissel/Post breeding dispersal

Carolinabirders,

I took advantage of the July 4 holiday's calming effect on Triangle traffic
and went over to Orange County to see the Dickcissel. I found the patch of
grass that Kent Fiala had marked off and in just a few minutes located the
male on the electric wire about 100 yards west of the nest site. A small
raptor flew by trailing a flock of smaller birds and flushed him, but he only
moved closer to the nest site. He flew away and in a little while came back
with the female who perched on a weed in the nest site patch while the male
resumed his post overlooking the nest. No evidence of fledging of young yet.

On my way back I stopped at the Hwy. 54 impoundment and found four Great
Egrets and two immature White Ibis. I could not find any other large waders
in a twenty minute search.
