Mahogany Rock and vicinity this weekend

This weekend produced roughly 3700 Broad-winged Hawks, with the winds
dictating that the vast majority of these were seen at Mahogany Rock. At my
post, I had 3 Bald Eagles and a good bit of variety to include Sharpies,
Coopers, Red-tails, Harriers, Kestrels, Merlins, and one lone wandering
Double-crested Cormorant. It actually is not odd to see cormorants at the
hawkwatch a couple of times a year. One Harrier came in almost too close but
finally decided to veer off over the trees at the last minute before
colliding with me.

If you didn't make it up this weekend, next weekend should also be fairly
productive and will surely present the last weekend opportunity to catch
this years Broad-wing movement. The layered clothing concept should be given
more consideration with each passing day on the Parkway as weather seems to
vary by the minute.
