2 Lark Sparrows at Cape Lookout, NC

Several of us went to Cape Lookout today, 2 October, in hopes of
large numbers of migrant landbirds, which I thought might happen
as a result of northwest winds (low offshore, high to the west).
However,
the numbers were not what we had hoped for (and the mosquitoes were
brutal!). Nevertheless the birding was still plenty enjoyable.

Our best find was 2 Lark Sparrows. One of these put on a really nice
show for us at the old coast guard station. Park staff had recently
mowed the lawn there and it was hopping with birds.

Other noteworthy finds were about 20 Cape May Warblers, 3 Blackpolls, 1
Bay-breasted, and 1 White-crowned Sparrow.

An aerial altercation between a Peregrine and a Merlin was a nice
sighting.

The day also hinted that winter is not far away--there were 15 phoebes,
a Sedge Wren, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 2 Cedar Waxwings, 2 Myrtle
Warblers, and Savannah Sparrows, Swamp Sparrow, and White-throated
Sparrow.

                                                                   John
