SECOND Tropical/Couch's Kingbird @ Pea Is

Bob Holmes just called to report seeing TWO kingbirds of the
Tropical/Couch's type
today Sunday 11/11 at Pea Island. He was leading a group from the Lower Neuse
Bird Club. The first kingbird was seen very well around 7 AM at the usual small
pond across from South Pond. The group then progressed back to the old
Coast Guard
Station. While watching numbers of Yellow-rumps and Robins pass by they noticed
a yellow-breasted kingbird that looked identical to the bird they had recently
left at South Pond fly in and perch. This was around 8:15 AM.

They had great looks at this kingbird near the Coast Guard Station and again
near the parking lot. It then made several half-hearted attempts to fly
north across the inlet
only to return to a perch near their position. After several minutes it
finally got
itself together and flew north across the inlet and out of sight.

Bob thought at the time that they were saying good-bye to the "South Pond"
Tropical
Kingbird as they watched it disappear only to discover that when they
returned to
South Pond around 10 AM that the original Tropical Kingbird was still there!!

This second kingbird apparently was doing exactly what the Fork-tailed did last
Sunday. Bob said the second kingbird looked identical to the first and it
was his
hunch that it was a Tropical but no one heard it vocalize to confirm the ID.

Bob also said they had good looks at the original Kingbird late Sat
afternoon as well. The group visited Mattamuskeet Sat morning but the dry
conditions pretty much made
that a bust.
