Birders,
Derb Carter just called me from "the spit" at Ft. Fisher where he was
looking at a Snowy Owl. He heard about the bird 3rd hand and
successfully relocated it today (11-24) around 12:30pm. The Snowy Owl
was seen sitting on a mound on the shore on the sound-side of the spit as
far out as you're allowed to drive.
Directions: From the road leading to the NC aquarium at Ft. Fisher (SE
of Wilmington, NC) take the road angling SE a couple hundred yards north
of the aquarium. This road quickly becomes deep sand and a 4WD vehicle
is REQUIRED. Alternatively, you can walk the 2-3 miles down the spit.
Continue down the spit until you are not allowed to drive farther and
note the Bald Head Island sign and some rope and fencing. The bird was
inside the roped off area on the sound side near that shore.
Wish I were there!
