Observed a Snowy Owl this morning at 9:45 at the south end of the Fort Fisher spit. The bird was resting in the sand and appears healthy (preening and actively rotating its head to observe predators and/or prey). To locate the bird, drive south past #4 x-over to the fence where it is illegal to drive past. On the west parallel to the beach is a fence marking off a tern nesting colony. Count back 8 fenceposts to the north and look perpendicular to the beach in a westerly direction. There is a tidal pond with a root snag of a fallen tree in the middle of the pond. Look south of the snag on the near shore of the pond where there is a slight sand ridge with some beach vegetation on it. The bird was on the ridge in the vegetation until 10:15 when I left. bird has plumage of an adult female and/or 1st yr. male according to Sibley.

Also had an adult Bald Eagle in a snag at the end of #4 x-over on the far shore over a tidal pond.
