This is just an observation that some of us regular birders in the Henderson
County area have noted this winter. It seems White-crowned Sparrow numbers
have dipped this year in the French Broad/Mills River valley. Last year they
were quite common and the vast majority of them were juveniles. This year,
while still easily found, numbers are much reduced and the vast majority of
birds are adults. Makes you wonder what may have happened to the birds in
their breeding range. Or maybe there's some other dynamic going on??? Just
curious. Other sparrow species numbers seem unchanged from normal.
