Hi Folks,
I wanted to let people know that another area is producing shorebirds. The
Buckhorn Reservoir in eastern Wilson County, NC is also quite low with
resulting large areas of habitat for shorebirding. On Tues. Aug. 20, I had 14
species with the highlights being 1 WILLET, 2 Western Sand., 1 BAIRD'S SAND.,
2 Stilt Sand., and the first Com. Snipe of the season. On Fri. Aug. 23, I
had similar results but there were 4 WILLETS today but no Bairds. So if
someone is closer to this area than the Triangle area hot spots of Falls and
Jordan Lakes, it might be a good idea to check it out!
The reservoir is located just north of NC 42 and west of NC 581 in extreme
eastern Wilson County (DeLorme p. 41, grid D6). Any access area is good for
birding but the best accessible flats are in the Bunn Rd area of the Turkey
Creek arm near the upper end. Another good area is near the dam at the boat
ramp access. Also along Rock Ridge school road. Hope someone can get out
there this weekend to check it out.
Later, Ricky
