NC Common Ground-Dove

A Common Ground-Dove was found today south of Charlotte, NC, by Don Seriff
and company. Taylor Piephoff refound the Ground-Dove this afternoon and we
had crippling views of the bird at 5:15 p.m. The bird is being seen in the
McDowell Park prairie restoration area off of Highway 49 south of
Charlotte. From Highway 49 north of the main gate to McDowell Park take
Shopton Road to the north. You will pass Four Horse Road and after
approximately 1 mile you will come to the prairie area on your left. There
is a small gravel entrance area there with a chain covered with white
plastic. Walk the road back into the prairie area (very muddy) passing a
small pond on your left. You will then go up a small incline into a grassy
field. In the distance you will see an old wooden barn close to which the
bird was orginally found in surrounding brush. To your left there is a
"line" of brush. At 5:15 p.m. today the Ground-Dove was sitting in this
line of brush at the end nearest Shopton Road. Taylor tied a piece of
orange tape near the spot where we left the bird. When I went to school
today I really didn't think I would see a Common Ground-Dove before dinner.
