Re: attracting vagrant hummers
Dear C-birders,
I have been leaving out my hummingbird feeders in hopes of
attracting a vagrant. Any tips on keeping the water from freezing?
Thanks,

You might want to look at the info on the Web site for Hilton Pond
Center for Piedmont Natural History with regard to winter vagrant
hummingbirds. The specific page is at
http://www.hiltonpond.org/ResearchHummerVagrantMain.html .
If you're not going to rig a heating device, I definitely suggest
bringing the feeder in at night and getting it out before dawn the
next morning. In really cold weather, it's good to have two feeders
to alternate at midday if you're around the house.
Best wishes,
