The following are highlights of the three hour Wednesday morning birdwalk
at
Charleston County's Caw Caw Park in Ravenel, SC led by Perry Nugent at 8:30
am.
65 species were seen and/or heard. The most interesting were; 3 Canada
Geese, 2 adult and 1 first year Bald Eagles, 3 Northern Harriers, 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, 1 Red-tailed
Hawk, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 female Archilochus Hummingbird viewed
through 4 spotting scopes for 20 minutes ( description below ), 4
Golden-crowned Kinglets, 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 10 Eastern Bluebirds, 12
Cedar Waxwings, 1 Loggerhead Shrike, and 15 American Goldfinches. The
Hummingbird was female or young which might make it difficult to identify.
It was green above, white below, had grayish green along sides, light
streaking
on throat with a dark spot (could not see color ) in the lower center, its
bill was
curved more than I am used to on a Ruby-throated, the wings seemed dark
gray
and blunt, its tail feathers were green with black toward the tips and the
tips of the
outer tail feathers were white although the third feather on both sides had
a very small white spot The 10 birders looking at this bird are leaning
toward it being an immature Black-chin, but since these hummingbirds are
very difficult to identify, we hope readers will help us figure this one
out.
