Birders,
The Southern Lake Norman CBC was held on Dec.15, 2002. A total of 94 species
was observed with highlights being 2 COMMON MERGANSERS at the McGuire thermal
ponds, 2 EARED GREBES on Lake Norman, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (long overdue for
this count) at Cowan's Ford Refuge. Waterfowl were in low numbers and winter
finches almost totally absent. ( 1 purple finch reported). Consistent with
widespread trends were 0 northern bobwhites and a new high for wild turkey
with 20. Special thanks to David and Marsha Wright for the use of their boat
to cover the lake and for the use of their home for the tally-up supper.
